Season 37, Episode 254: Slow dance, small steps

Updated: Apr 8

Have you ever been invited to a dance? Or more specifically asked to dance?

(I know it might seem like I asked the same question twice, but its two seperate questions, I promise.)

If you can't say yes to both of those questions, I have a feeling you can probably say yes to one of them.

Being invited to a glamourous event that requires all of the works-hair, makeup, a fancy dress and hopefully a grand and show stopping entrance.

Getting ready is somewhat the easy part, its the preparation before the main event. Actually stepping out on the dance floor and dancing is something entirely different.

It's either the part you might be dreading or the part that made all the effort and coordinating worth it.

Now, regardless of the level of excitement we have arrived at the sometimes tricky part- who is going to take the lead?

Is the song slow or uptempo?

Is it a couple dance or just two people enjoying the same song?

Hand placement is always important.

Rythm is a must (even no rythm is rythm, trust me.)

Then comes the part that is essential to the entire event, the actual dancing.

(Now, I'm sure that you are probably reading these words either remembering an enjoyable dance or a cringe worthy moment that will stay with you forever.)

Very recently during a conversation with one of my dear friends, she reminded me of the beautfiul, intentional, yet slow dance with the Lord.

And if were are being honest, its probably one of the most awkward dances to be invited to.

It's an invitation that we accept knowing we have been waiting for it our entire lives, just not sure it's truly for us.

We very likely aren't beautifully dressed or looking glamourus when we arrive. Probably looking more out of place than truly belonging.

Yet, when He approaches us and asks us to dance, our feeble and hesistant yes brings us to the most amazing dance of our lives.

A yes that involves small steps as the music slowly starts playing.

And although we may step on His feet a few times learning to follow His lead, we will slowly get the steps down just right.

It's a dance where the song changes but the dance partner and the steps never change.

One where the enjoyment and beauty of the experience depends on our humulity of never believing that we would be a better leader.

Because if we get too caught up in ourselves, we will without a doubt mess it all up.

Our pride and arrogance, enters the room and were dancing faster than the song currently playing.

Our indulgence and greed stifle the movements and everything becomes stiff and stale.

Our desires and dreams when competing with His will can often cause us to wonder if the music is still playing at all.

And nothing is worse than dancing long after the music fades.

As our conversation came to a close I sat in the gratitude of finally being able to hear the music again and bringing nothing to the dance floor but my humility accompained by my feeble and hesitant yes.

I hope that wherever you are in life, when the invitation arrives, you accept it so that you can enjoy the most beaitful dance that never ends or gets boring.
